No Paper.

A quick note. We don’t have nay paper at school. Yes you read that right, no paper. The copiers are dry. Early this morning I saw a teacher making copies on pink paper she had stashed at the beginning of the year. This situation must present a serious problem for most teachers, especially when it […]

History of Computers

Rather than a lecture about the history of computers I gave each student an invention to research and asked them to create a presentation they would give to the class. The format I chose for presenting was a little different and worked particularly well in one class while in others it was a dud. I […]

Are you using the computers yet?

There’s something that been on my mind since the beginning of the year and maybe writing about it will help me figure it out.
My students have been using the computers since the second day of school. As soon as I learned how to get them logged on we were click-clacking away on the keyboard. To […]

Geeking out on Moodle

On Tuesday I successfully rolled out moodle to all of my classes. So far its awesome. For anyone unfamiliar with moodle it is an open source (yeah, free!) course management system. I feel like recording the experience for my own reasons as much as for anyone who might be interested. Casual readers be warned, I\’m […]

Slang

Me: “Software and programs are the instructions you give the computer. Once we start programming we will be writing our own programs and telling the computer what to do.”
Student: “Word?”
Me: “Word. Microsoft already wrote that program (Ha.), but yes we really will be writing our own programs.”
Not a single laugh.

Clap your hands

We started out by trying to clap at rate of one Hertz. After a couple of rounds everyone got into a rhythm. Then we tried two Hertz where it quickly became clear I can’t keep a beat, at all. In my first class a few of the girls in the front asked me to stop because […]

Two things

This week I learned two things about teaching computers that I probably already knew from teaching other things.
1. Everything takes a lot longer than I expect it to. “Yeah, this will take them about a period, maybe two” turns into, “I hope we can wrap this up by the end of the week.” I thought […]

What is a computer?

Today was the first day of teaching my students about computers. I’m still figuring out what and how I’m going to teach these classes but I do know that I want to get them interested and I want to include as many other subjects as possible in my lessons.
We started out with some True/False statements […]

First real post

Welcome to my blog. Since I already have some comments on my self-motivational posts (thanks) and there’s a link on The Computer Science Teacher Blog (thanks again), I figure I better start posting. Before I get started though there’s something I have to tell you, this isn’t my first blog. Last year I started a […]

Public Market

I am going to the public market but when I get back I will get this blog up and running.
